When Perplexity is the better starting point
Use Perplexity when the question depends on current pages, official documentation, recent product changes, public prices, company announcements or external references. The interface pushes you toward links, so it is easier to move from a generated answer to the original source.
The important habit is to open the cited pages. A citation is not proof by itself. The page may be only loosely related, outdated, paywalled, promotional or weaker than the answer suggests.
When ChatGPT is better during research
Use ChatGPT when the research material already exists and you need to understand it. ChatGPT is useful for turning rough notes into an outline, comparing arguments, explaining technical terms, building interview questions, drafting an executive summary or converting a long source list into a research brief.
ChatGPT can also help you ask better questions. If Perplexity gives you ten links, ChatGPT can help cluster them into themes, risks, contradictions, missing evidence and follow-up searches.
Best combined workflow
Start with Perplexity for source discovery. Save the source URLs, then ask ChatGPT to organize the claims into a table: claim, supporting source, confidence, what still needs verification. This turns fast research into a safer process.
For academic or high-stakes work, add specialized tools such as Google Scholar, Consensus, Elicit, PubMed or official databases. Perplexity and ChatGPT are assistants, not replacements for primary sources.
